Dr Pepper Business Started in 1929

Mason Bottling Company has been family owned and operated for 69 years. The business more frequently called Mason Dr Pepper was established by the late William "Koockie" Koock in 1929 when he purchased the bottling interest of the late Arch Reichenau and Roy Bratton.

The building on the northeast corner of the square was purchased and Mr. Koock operated the business there until 1965 when it was moved to the present location, Highway 87 North and Avenue A. The business continued to grow and more space was needed so the building was enlarged in 1976.

From a one man and one truck operation, the Dr Pepper business has grown and currently 14 full-time and one part-time employee are on the staff in Mason. The owners and operators are Bill W. Koock, president; A. F. "Boog" Holloway, vice president and general manager; and Joyce Holloway, secretary/treasurer.

The business also has a warehouse in Kerrville which has seven employees, six are full-time and one is part-time.

Several of the Mason employees have been working for the business since they were teenagers. The fleet of vehicles now includes eight trucks, four pick-ups and three concession trailers.

Mason Bottling Co. has the Dr Pepper franchise for Mason, Llano, Kimble, Menard, Kerr and Gillespie Counties.

Along with Dr Pepper and 7 Up (Regular and Diet), Big Red, RC Cola, Orange Crush, Grape Crush, Hires Rootbeer, Spicewood Springs Water, Snapple products, and Hawaiian Punch are distributed by the firm.

Throughout the 69 year history of the company changes have been made to continue providing the best service possible to customers so that they can provide drinks desired by their customers.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to make changes of a less desirable nature to owners of a business. Among these was on May 12, 1993, the last day for bottling in the Mason plant. This change had to be made because glass returnable bottles were being replaced with plastic and cans by most all industries. Some returnable bottles are purchased from another Dr Pepper bottler for customers who prefer drinks in glass bottles.

As time goes on, descendants of William and Vera Koock will continue to strive to provide Dr Pepper, 7 Up and other soft drinks in the best way possible for all of their customers.
